San Juan, Puerto Rico
June 23-28, 2026

We have been closely following current events as we consider the next steps for the 2026 SSEC Conference. We want to be transparent about this process and the values guiding our decision-making. Based on feedback from accepted presenters as well as ongoing political developments, we have made the difficult decision to move the conference from Cuba.
This was not a decision we made lightly, requiring us to hold together both practical considerations and our original commitments. Part of our intention in holding the conference in Cuba was a desire to center Latine voices. We are now even more convinced that this is a critical moment to center Latine voices, histories, and lived experiences, and we approached the relocation process with that responsibility firmly in mind.
With all of this in mind, we are moving the 2026 SSEC Conference to San Juan, Puerto Rico. The conference dates will remain the same: June 23–28, 2026.
SSEC intentionally grounds its work in place, affirming that education is not abstract but deeply connected to land, culture, and community knowledge. We do not simply convene meetings in different locations. We design programs that invite sustained engagement with local histories and local communities and their ways of knowing. Puerto Rico’s ongoing struggles and strengths related to colonialism, language, migration, and self-determination make it a generative site for the conversations similar to the ones we hoped to foster in Cuba, and an entire day of the conference will be dedicated to visiting local sites, engaging community spaces, and learning from the cultural, historical, and social contexts that shape Puerto Rico.
Because of this change in location, we will be reopening the call for proposals, slightly revised to reflect the new location. The updated call is available online here. New proposals will be due by March 1, and the submission portal is reopen now via Oxford Abstracts.
In the meantime, we are actively working with contacts in Puerto Rico to plan the conference at the new location. We will share updated information about costs and the conference itinerary as soon as it becomes available. There will be a designated conference hotel, but attendees will not be required to stay there. We expect to reopen registration in March.
Thank you again for your flexibility, thoughtfulness, and continued engagement with SSEC. We recognize the uncertainty this change may create, and we are grateful for your willingness to move through it with us. Please do not hesitate to reach out to Amy Allen (execdirector@ssec-inc.org) with questions.
