Report Summary
SSEC Annual Meeting – Rome, Italy
June 10 – 14, 2014

Thirty-four SSEC members and guests enjoyed a five-day conference in Rome and environs. With a conference theme, Updating World History, participants enjoyed a walking tour of Rome and visits to two major historical sites. These field trip visits were followed by a day of member presentations and the annual business meeting. The conference was ably hosted by Academic Initiatives Abroad (AIA) Abroad Rome Center. Scott Schlimgen is the president of AIA. The images below capture the flavor of the conference.

On any tour of Rome, it is hard to miss the Roman Coliseum, which is currently undergoing extensive renovation.  

A street in Herculaneum, a Roman city that was buried when Mount Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79.

Conferees study a model layout of Hadrian’s Villa. Hadrian was a Roman Emperor A.D. 76-138.

Villa d’Este is a spectacular villa, which displays an extensive collection of artifacts in early Roman history.
