Lee F. Anderson, Schools as Travel Agencies: Helping People to Move Up, Down, and Sideways in Human Culture (4 MB), 1977. Lee Anderson was one of the most creative thinkers in our field. As a political scientist, Lee willingly shared his knowledge and good humor with all of us.
Kenneth Boulding, Toward the Year 2000 (3 MB), 1971. Boulding was a giant in economics and systems thinking. He was a frequent contributor to SSEC publications.
Suzanne Wiggins Helburn, Preparing to Teach Economics: Sources and Approaches. (4.4 MB, 28 pp), 1971. A “tip sheet” for teachers setting up a high school economics course for the first time. Written by one of the pioneers of the New Social Studies.
Hazel Whitman Hertzberg, Social Studies Reform 1880-1980 (8 MB), 1981. An authoritative account of reform in the social studies over a critical century of its history. Part of the SPAN Project.
Ronald Lippitt, Social Psychology: A Resource for Elementary and Secondary Educators. (6.8 MB, 64 pp), 1975. With a forward by Executive Director Irving Morrissett, Lippett’s paper was one of a series intended to help teachers understand the nature of the social science disciplines.
Irving Morrissett, ed. Concepts and Structure in the New Social Science Curricula, (3 MB), 1967. This is a seminal volume in social science education, and it was one of the first descriptions of the New Social Studies. The preface and Chapter 1 are included here.
Walter Parker and John Jarolimek, Citizenship and the Critical Role of the Social Studies (8 MB), 1984. This volume by two very thoughtful thinkers in our field is still worthy of study
Lawrence Senesh, Economics. (2.23 MB, 20 pp), 1966. Introduced by Irving Morrissett as an outline of the major concepts, structure, and methods of the social science of economics. Senesh’s immediate focus is the K-6 curriculum.
Lawrence Senesh, Quality of Life. (10.9 MB, 70 pp), 1972. Using two Presidential reports, Senesh explores economic growth and its relationship to the quality of life. The paper aims to help teachers make the teaching of social science more relevant and to help students develop a greater respect for the political process of society.
Laurel R. Singleton, C is for Citizenship: Children’s Literature and Civic Understanding (10 MB), 1997. C is for Citizenship is one of a series of volumes written by former Associate Director of SSEC, Laurel Singleton. The volume cites important literature and links it to classroom activities.
Revised Social Studies Methods Book
Welcome to the 2014 revised ebook edition of Teaching the Social Sciences and History in Secondary Schools: A Methods Book. Originally published in 1996, and updated in 2000 and 2011, this revised edition is available directly from SSEC. In addition to having its content comprehensively updated, each chapter now includes active web links to a wide variety of Internet-based social studies teaching resources.

The Public Issues Series
The Public Issues Series was originally conceived by the Harvard Social Studies project in the 1960s and 1970s. The purpose of the series was to help students analyze and discuss persisting human dilemmas related to public issues. In the late 1980s, the SSEC published the series.
